Scalp Microbiota

What is Scalp Microbiota?

A.

A. Microbiota is the community of icroorganisms (bacteria, fungi, yeasts) that live in or on the human body. The scalp has its own microbiota, which plays a role in its homeostasis and protection. Like your skin microbiome, the scalp microbiome is its first line of defense against external aggressors, which means keeping it in check is critical to your overall hair health.

B.

The scalp microbiome ecosystem can regulate and affect functions of the scalp, including the production of sebum, regeneration of follicles, and pathogenesis of scalp disorders.

C.

When the negative microbes become dominant and overpower the positive microbes, the scalp microbiota will become imbalanced.

Premature Hair Loss

Scalp Sensitivity

Scalp Aging

Main Symptoms and Consequences

The main difference is the type of microbes that lives in each area. The scalp has a higher propensity for yeast and fungi whereas the skin and other locations have a higher level of bacteria than yeast.

Hair follicles have their own microbiome. The follicles push out sebum (the natural oils that make your hair greasy) – which the bacteria and fungus on your scalp will feed on. This can layer up and cause deep-rooted scalp irritation.

HEALTHY SCALP

  • Irritation-free surface
  • Natural desquamation renews skin
  • Healthy community of microbiota
  • Effective barrier against aggressors

vs

UNBALANCED SCALP

  • Damaged barrier, more vulnerable to stress Premature ageing of the scalp
  • Uncomfortable scalp
  • Greasy scalp, excess sebum,有頭氣等等
  • Itchy and tight
  • Flaky, rashes, and acne
  • Can alter the scalp’s immune response, leading to issues like seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis
  • Malassezia sp. – the yeast that grows on the hair shaft and scalp, plays a key role in dandruff
